Every Liberal and Conservative Should Care about Sweden joining NATO

Introduction

Swedes got an early New Years present on Tuesday 26th December when the Turkish foreign policy committee approved its bid to join the North American Treaty Alliance (NATO). Now, parliament will likely vote for it next as the greatest objection was set to come from the foreign policy committee with knowledge on Ankara -Stockholm relations. Sweden has made some concessions which include;

  1. They will lift the ban on exporting military equipment to Turkey.
  2. They will address the burning of Korans.
  3. They will stop protecting Kurdish activist and militants, considered terrorists by Erdogan.

Earlier this month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had openly linked ratification of Sweden’s NATO membership to the U.S. Congress’ approving Turkish request to buy 40 new F-16 fighter jets and kits to modernise Turkey’s existing fleet.

Turkey is the world’s largest 20th economy with a population of 84 million people. Turkey has grown than most emerging market economies over the last decade, but growth has slowed since 2018.
